Unemployment, lack of resources, homes without parents, hunger, abuse and neglect are all part of the broader socio-economic landscape of rural KwaZulu-Natal, a province with the largest number of impoverished people and the highest HIV infection rates in the country. RHIVA, or Reducing HIV in Adolescents, is a groundbreaking school-based HIV prevention initiative being tested in 14 high schools in Vulindlela, a rural district of KZN that faces many of these challenges.

The North West Province is home to some of the poorest and most farflung rural communities in South Africa. In support of education initiatives for areas like these, the Royal Embassy of the Netherlands is funding a network of 76 school-based education development and support centres throughout the province.

This is the story of Joseph Nanana who was living on a rubbish dump. Through a programme of Care and Support devised by MIET AFRICA, in collaboration with its partners and the Department of Education as well as funding from the Royal Netherlands Embassy, vulnerable children like Joseph in the North West Province of South Africa are given the opportunity for a better future.
