The SYP programme was based on a declaration signed by regional Ministers to strengthen government capacity to accelerate progress towards sustainable achievement of the Millennium Development Goals that related to sexual reproductive health and rights. The United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) was the fund holder, and MIET AFRICA was appointed as the implementing partner in KwaZulu-Natal (KZN).
In KZN, the main output was strengthening the capacity of civil society organizations to improve social behaviour, especially among young people in five key targeted priority districts across the province, while one of the main objectives was to promote collaboration between stakeholders. There were three main government partners: the Departments of Health, Education and Social Development, as well as the Office of the Premier, plus many other stakeholders, including youth groups, higher education institutions, NGOs and community-based organizations. One of MIET AFRICA’s main tasks was to bring these stakeholders together to ensure that meaningful participation and partnering took place to ensure that the objectives of the programme were achieved. Because of delays with the contract, what was supposed to be a year-long project was reduced to five months. Despite that challenge, all activities were completed on time and the targets exceeded. On completion of the phase, we received an unqualified external audit from the UNFPA-appointed auditors.
