2000–2012
LAHL was a collaboration between the KwaZulu-Natal Department of Education and MIET AFRICA. In Phase IV, the programme used a human rights-based approach to address the issues faced by children living in communities affected by HIV&AIDS. This approach to development is based on the principle that everyone has rights, and that duty bearers have an obligation to fulfil them. It reminds us that the work we do is not based on charity, but on helping marginalized people claim the rights that are theirs. We also believe it helps to overcome the lethargy that many duty-bearers have when providing services that people have a right to.
LAHL IV was implemented in three clusters of schools in Nongoma, a rural area in the north of KwaZulu-Natal. In the programme, we targeted learners, community members and teachers, focussing on child and community participation that ensures meaningful involvement with issues that affect their lives.
LAHL was funded by the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation.
