2005–2011
This large-scale project successfully aimed to establish a network of education centres in the KwaZulu-Natal and North West Provinces in South Africa to serve as hubs to support education and community development in rural school communities. In total, 157 centres were established—120 in KZN and 37 in the North West.
Through the successful completion of the programme, the following objectives were achieved:
- Increased access to educational resources
- Improvement in the quality of education through the provision of training for teachers, education centre staff and community members
- Enhanced resource delivery and communication between the Department of Education and schools
MIET AFRICA also developed manuals for the centre managers training programme, comprising:
- Module 1 Community Development
- Module 2 Asset Management
- Module 3 Office Administration
- Module 4 Financial Management
The network of education centres, fully owned and maintained by the two Provincial Department of Education, serve as hubs for the delivery of education services and resources to rural schools and their communities. Key programmes that are provided through these centres include: Mathematics and Science; Literacy; Information, Communication and Technology; HIV&AIDS; National Curriculum Statement training programmes for teachers and officials. Learnerships and accredited courses are also offered through partnerships with Sector Education Training Authorities (SETAs) and universities.
