About the course

The aim of this training course is to equip educators with skills in group facilitation for application in experientially-based training workshops in a variety of focus areas.

Course outline

The course consists of six units:

Unit 1: Introduction to adult education

Unit 2: Plan and prepare for facilitation (Part 1)

Unit 3: Plan and prepare for facilitation (Part 2)

Unit 4: Facilitating learning (Part 1)

Unit 5: Facilitating learning (Part 2)

Unit 6: Evaluating learning and facilitation

Course outcomes

By the end of this course, participants will be able to:

  • Plan and prepare for facilitation
    • Match course outcomes with skills levels and skills gaps of learners
    • Conduct a needs assessment
    • Align course facilitation to ensure that learners’ needs are met
    • Set up and run a programme that provides a professional and quality learning experience for participants
  • Facilitate learning
    • Facilitate learning with understanding and reflexivity
    • Understand how adults learn
    • Choose from a variety of facilitation methods
    • Apply principles of facilitation
  • Evaluate learning and facilitation
    • Implement a thorough participatory evaluation process involving all stakeholders
    • Identify weaknesses and build on strengths in order to improve their own facilitation practice

Requirements for passing the course

  1. Full attendance at every session
  2. Submission of a Portfolio of Evidence consisting of assessment tasks where participants are required to apply what they have learned on the course to practical facilitation

To pass the course it is necessary to receive a “Competent” rating for all assessment tasks. Portfolios of Evidence will be internally and externally moderated.

Course length and delivery

The course is delivered over 6 one-day sessions, to take place weekly.
