The report includes a road map for planning to build and maintain a CSTL school. A CSTL school is a rights-based, inclusive school that ensures that every child—especially the most marginalized—receives a quality education that unlocks their full potential as an agent of sustainable development. The goal is that every school in the SADC region becomes a CSTL school that provides transformational, quality, inclusive education to all, especially the most marginalized, and builds the human capital needed for sustainable, inclusive development. Annual regional Care and Support for Teaching and Learning (CSTL) sharing meeting
The annual 2018 CSTL regional sharing meeting was held in Johannesburg from 11- 13 December. Hosted by the SADC Secretariat, in partnership with MIET AFRICA and the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (SDC), this was the final SDC-supported sharing meeting. Delegates included education ministry officials from 13 of the 16 SADC Member States, UN partners, and NGOs involved in the area of care and support.
A key theme running through the meeting was the importance of youth empowerment, critical for Member States to deliver on their development imperatives and commitments. In addition to a dedicated session on youth empowerment, youth representatives participated in several of the meeting’s sessions and an opportunity was provided for two youth to make opening comments.
Opening remarks were also made by the three initiating CSTL partners. The representative from the SADC Secretariat, Ms Lomthie Mavimbela, acknowledged the contributions made to CSTL by the various groups represented.
CSTL From Policy to Practice
This is as an introduction to the Care and Support for Teaching and Learning (CSTL) Programme, and is intended for leaders and decision makers in education, officials at all levels, and those in partnership with education sectors across the SADC Region. Its four sections include: an overview of the history of CSTL; a synopsis of the status of children and youth in SADC; a summary of how various policy and regulatory frameworks define clearly the mandate for care and support for teaching and learning; an explanation of the concept of and processes for mainstreaming care and support into education.

The RSP is a generic resource which aims to guide Ministries of Education in SADC Member States through the process of mainstreaming care and support for teaching and learning into every policy, programme and process.
The RSP toolkit consists of 15 booklets, including 12 action step booklets, sets of action step cards and a country roadmap. The materials are available in English, French and Portuguese.
National Support Pack
The CSTL National Support Pack has been customized, from the Regional Support Pack, specifically for South Africa. This material was developed in partnership with the Department of Basic Education. It consists of a road map (poster), action step cards (large and small), 12 action step booklets and 2 additional information booklets.
Speak Out! Against Abuse!
There are six posters and three booklets in this series: a learner booklet, a teacher booklet and a booklet for parents and caregivers.The materials are available in English, French and Portuguese.
Materials have been developed as part of the project: Speak Out! Addressing sexual abuse and violence against children, which is being implemented jointly by the SADC Ministries of Education and MIET AFRICA through Care and Support for Teaching and Learning (CSTL) SADC.
CSTL to the fore in Malawi
CSTL has been highlighted in an article in the Nyasa Times on 16 November 2015: “Ministry calls for partnership approach in improving quality of education”.
This was on the occasion of an open day organized for showcasing CSTL products and services, which was addressed by the Director of Basic Education in the Ministry of Education Science and Technology, Dr Joseph Chimombo.
Love, Care and Protection from Infancy to Adolescence
MIET AFRICA is proud to be partnering with the SADC Secretariat and REPSSI as the latter hosts its third bi-annual Psychosocial Support Forum 2015: Love, Care and Protection from Infancy to Adolescence, taking place in Victoria Falls, Zimbabwe, from 1-3 September 2015.
The overall aim of this forum is to raise awareness of the need for, and approaches to, providing love, care and protection for girls and boys through the different stages of their development, from infancy to adolescence, and to influence policy and programming at national- and regional-levels. Psychosocial support is critical for children, families and communities to develop resilience and to thrive. It also forms part of the Essential Package of Care and Support adopted by SADC Ministries of Education as part of the Care and Support for Teaching and Learning (CSTL) Programme.
