Although no sector of society is spared the impact of the coronavirus pandemic, education has been hard hit by the disruption to schooling. However, the implications of school closures, lockdowns and physical distancing can be mitigated. In response to these disruptions MIET AFRICA will establish an effective e-platform at its 10 FutureLife-Now! schools in Lesotho, that will allow for online communication, meetings, workshops and dialogue exchanges. As part of establishing the e-platform at the 10 Lesotho FutureLife-Now! schools, MIET AFRICA wishes to also procure specific products. MIET AFRICA requires a service provider to supply and install an upgradeable solar system to the 10 FutureLife-Now! Schools in Lesotho. Despite efforts from government and other stakeholders, the level of households in Lesotho connected to the grid is still low. To enable the effective functioning of an e-platform at the 10 FutureLife-Now! schools in Lesotho, the programme will supply and install solar systems. Quotations must be submitted by email by 12 noon on 24 August 2020. MIET AFRICA’s regional school-based programme, FutureLife-Now! is supporting 10 schools in Zimbabwe. To enable the effective functioning of an e-platform at each of the schools, is making available the necessary hardware and software, including the provision of solar systems. MIET AFRICA requires a service provider to supply and install solar power to 10 FutureLife-Now! secondary schools in Malawi. Malawi’s growing population contributes to an increasingly energy-stressed country. The National Energy Policy attributes an estimated 93% of total energy demand to biomass energy. The supply of 320 MW installed generation capacity falls short on the connected demand which leads to frequent load shedding. As a result, the FutureLife-Now! programme seeks to ensure that solar power is supplied and installed at the 10 FutureLife-Now! schools. Click here for the full ToR and submission details.

Throughout SA’s lockdown, MIET AFRICA has supported its employees with various initiatives to ease and mitigate the negative affects the pandemic has placed on its staff, its projects, and its project beneficiaries. We are pleased that projects which reach the most vulnerable continue uninterrupted. Allowing those staff who can, to work from home, regular project and staff meetings, and the introduction of a sophisticated digital platform to integrate all administration, procurement and project workflow, MIET AFRICA is still hard at work fulfilling our purpose – to improve the lives of children and youth.

Despite all the assistance, MIET AFRICA EXCO recognize that these are trying times for staff but with messages such as these from EXCO, we know we are being heard and supported.

An excerpt from a message from MIET AFRICA’s EXCO to all MIET AFRICA staff:

Dear MIET AFRICANS,

According to the United Nations, the COVID-19 pandemic is a health and human crisis threatening the food security and nutrition of millions of people around the world. MIET AFRICA’s regional programme, FutureLife-Now!, recently provided food parcels to vulnerable learners and their families in Malawi through its humanitarian emergency COVID-19 response project.

With the support of local youth facilitators, Malawi Future-Life Now! In-Country Coordinators provided food parcels to over 700 learners from the 10 FutureLife-Now! schools in Malawi. Food included maize flour, rice, beans, cooking oil, sugar and salt. Hand sanitizer was also provided.

During the distribution, which took place between 3-7 July, COVID-19 precautionary measures were strictly adhered to, such as hand washing, the wearing of masks and social distancing.

FutureLife-Now! is a Southern African Development Community (SADC) school-based programme aimed at reducing new HIV infections and increasing ART adherence amongst young people in the region.  

MIET AFRICA is a sub recipient of Beyond Zero (the primary recipient) of the Adolescent Girls and Young Women’s Programme (AGYW) In and Out of School of the Global Fund grant.

Services aim to effect risk reduction, behaviour change and empowerment. The grant is aligned with South Africa’s National Support Plan, which prioritizes AGYW aged 15 to 24, tracking indicators on new infections, condom use, pre-exposure prophylaxis and gender-based violence.
