MIET AFRICA, in partnership with the Department of Basic Education in South Africa, the National Education Collaboration Trust, and UNICEF South Africa hosted the second national Care and Support for Teaching and Learning (CSTL) Conference from 24 – 26 November 2021. Under the theme of ‘Reimagining Care and Support Taking Stock: Education Recovery and Continuity’, the conference brought together sector stakeholders and partners into dialogue on the collaboration between government and its non-government partners necessary for delivering on the national care and support mandate in the country.
Preceding the conference, the week kicked off with the Comprehensive Sexuality Education Conference (22-23 November 2021) recognized as key to gender responsive and socially inclusive education, which culminated in the launch of the Breaking the Silence Reality Documentary Series (28 November 2021).
Taking place over three days, the CSTL Conference profiled initiatives that have proven to be successful in supporting schools during periods of school closure during the COVID-19 pandemic as well as enabling their safe reopening. Further, conference delegates deliberated on lessons learnt from the COVID-19 pandemic and the implications these have for strengthening the system to provide continuous school-based care and support services.
An overall successful week of meaningful stakeholder engagement and practical conversations, to support implementation and take CSTL forward in its mandate to support learners and educators to develop and thrive.
